Does custom CC list support system exclusive hex values?

Beitrag von lrblouie »

Hi everyone,

Apologies up front if this has been a topic in the past - I looked around but did not find a specific match.

I use a Roland VR-700 to control the HX3. The reason why I'm stuck on the VR-700 is that 1) the keybed is absolutely wonderful, 2) it has 76 keys (very useful when playing sounds other than organ), and 3) the VR-700 sends the high key trigger point via midi which works great with the HX3. Unfortunately, Roland does not send MIDI CC information for the drawbars (undoubtedly deliberately done by Roland to annoy their customer base). With the MIDIOX software I can see that the drawbars do send data through MIDI.

So here is the question - I'm just trying to understand the HX3 Remote's capabilities related to creating custom CC Lists. Is it possible to align sysex hex values to HX3 parameters via the Remote's custom CC list configuration? Or is it simply a mapping tool to align MIDI CC from the sending keyboard to the HX3? Unfortunately I'm not technical enough to understand if that is even possible!

Thank you, Luis.

It's not supported... Roland Sysex does not work!

Sorry....

From the Wiki:
Note: The MIDI Custom CC translation routine in HX3 firmware works for standard MIDI continuous controllers on upper manual channel only. For Doepfer d3C and similar controllers, the NI B4 setting is a better choice. There are some keyboards on the market (Roland, Viscount, Hammond) that use quite weird drawbar encoding schemes. RPN/NRPN parameter changes, SysEx messages as well as special encodings will not work with Custom CCs. Use the specialised Hammond CC sets instead if using a Hammond XK or SK series. There are no plans to support the NRPN/SysEx madness.

Hello Luis,

the VR700 Keyboard is one of the best waterfall keyboards I ever played. Very nice and
IMHO better than all the Fatar keyboards there.

Do you have one of the newer HX3 Expanders with 2 Midi-Ins ?
If yes, you can think about adding a used Ocean Beach Drawbar-Controlunit (or something similar)
to control the HX3 ?

Maybe a solution if you want to keep your VR700 ?

Another option could be a Midi Solutions Event-Processor (small fully programmable hardware box)
to "convert" your Sysex Data into Control Change Data,
but I am not quite sure if it works, should be...

Cheers
Markus

Thank you, Markus. I do have the HX3 MK4 and a Native Instruments (Böhm) B4D drawbar controller from the old days of using the B4-II. It actually works pretty well with the HX3 just not as convenient as using the VR directly. I completely agree with you, the VR-700 (keybed) is absolutely amazing and the VR's Midi supports high-point triggering.

I will look at the Midi Solutions Event-Processor; thank you for that insight.

Regards, Luis.
